A historic victory and a retirement
Lee Se-dol is best known for being the only human to win a game against AlphaGo, Google's artificial intelligence system, in the March 2016 match. According to The Korea Herald, that victory in the fourth game remains legendary in competitive Go, and the match is considered a turning point in the global history of AI. A professional since the age of 12, Lee won 14 major international titles before leaving professional play in 2019.
After retiring, as the source reports, he devoted himself to university lectures, board game design, and unscripted television programs, including the Netflix survival series The Devil's Plan. Today Lee officially describes himself as unemployed: his search for a new purpose is at the center of the new program.
The new program and manual labor
Unemployed Lee Se-dol is a five-episode reality series in which Lee tries manual jobs that, for now, resist automation, from washing windows on skyscrapers to door-to-door delivery of yogurt drinks. Producer Lee Myung-seop explained at a press conference in Seoul that the project stems from admiration for Lee's composure and strategy and coincides with the tenth anniversary of the match against AlphaGo.
Lee said he did not aim to deepen his knowledge of a single profession, but wanted to learn about society and life through different jobs. He added that he had developed greater respect for those who perform physical labor and that he had realized on several occasions how inexperienced he was. He also invited the audience to follow his growth more than the work performance itself.
Singer-songwriter Jung Jae-hyung, who hosts the program with comedian Jang Do-yeon, said that the series speaks to anyone who finds themselves without work: AI seems to be running ahead while people are left behind, and Lee takes on these experiences on behalf of viewers.
What remains open
Lee acknowledged that he has not yet found something that can fill the void left by Go and that he accepted the television offer precisely in the hope of discovering an activity capable of replacing the game. The program debuts Friday on KBS. The news report does not indicate ratings, audience reactions, or any possible relationship between Lee's retirement and AI's impact on the world of Go: these aspects remain to be verified. The case, as presented, offers above all a personal testimony about the relationship between work, identity, and automation.
